- Grill’s Garden Salad – chilled field greens, jicama, tortilla strips and cotija cheese tossed with raspberry tamarind vinaigrette
- Fire-Roasted Tomato Soup – creamy puree of mesquite-grilled tomatoes, pasilla chiles, roasted corn and onions with chicken chorizo, garlic and spices
Entrees (choice of):
- Fresh Fish Tacos – traditional fish soft tacos, pineapple mango salsa served with pasilla-cilantro green rice mesquite-grilled chicken
- Mesquite-Grilled Chicken Breast – served with mesquite-grilled fresh vegetables, orange-achiote sauce, Chef’s potatoes
- Carnitas Yucatan – slow-roasted garlic, achiote, lime and orange marinated pork, citrus habanero marinated red onions, peruvian beans, pasilla-cilantro rice, fresh avocado relish, sweet corn cake

We went to Richard Sandoval’s Asian-Latin fusion restaurant Zengo last month (which I mistakenly labeled as Mexican), and this month we are going to an actual Mexican restaurant. Don’t let the genre of the cuisine lead you astray, however — this is Richard Sandoval first iconic restaurant, and it does not disappoint. Michelin Guide recommended, they write: “Upscale Mexican dining thrives at Chef Richard Sandoval’s muy popular Maya.” Sandoval blends the earthy flavors of his native Mexico with worldly ingredients and creative cooking techniques to create the modern Mexican cuisine at Maya. Carefully crafted, yet bold flavored. Rooted in tradition, yet adventuring into contemporary tastes with an internationally acclaimed blend of authentic Mexican ingredients and innovative culinary techniques. Rated 4.5 stars on OpenTable – out of almost 2,000 reviews.

- Squash blossom quesadillas (v) corn masa / squash blossom / poblano chiles / oaxaca cheese / three salsas / crema fresca / cotija cheese
- Ceviche de salmón citrus juices / cucumber / red onion / mango / mint
- Pork carnitas tacos adobo pork / caramelized pineapple / onion / cilantro / salsa verde (the chef wanted to showcase these so much that when I was negotiating the menu, they required this to be on it!)
Entrees (choice of):
- Veggie chile relleno (v) roasted poblano pepper / mushrooms / chayote / squash / corn / cauliflower / chipotle entomatada sauce / black bean purée / queso fresco
- Chicken mole poblano chicken breast / cilantro rice / caramelized plantain / mole poblano
- Chipotle camarones tequila flambé shrimp / black bean purée / monterrey cheese huarache / chipotle sauce / frisée salad
- Steak fajitas skirt steak / peppers / onion / panela cheese / morita salsa / homemade corn tortillas
Dessert (choice of):
- Flan de coco coconut milk / blueberry sauce / fresh fruit

The Single Gourmet has followed him from here to DC, to San Francisco to Las Vegas, and at each location he raises the bar. With over 30 Latin restaurants across the United States, Europe, Mexico and the Middle East, Richard Sandoval is a global pioneer in contemporary Latin cuisine. Nine of his restaurants have been voted best in their category. For his work, Chef Sandoval has been awarded Mexico’s National Toque d’Oro, Bon Appetit Restaurateur of the Year and Cordon d’Or Restaurateur of the Year. He was also nominated for James Beard Outstanding Restaurateur. Zagat says “an upscale tri-level space designed by AvroKO sets the stage at this Grand Central-area Pan-Latin presenting Richard Sandoval’s imaginative Asian-Latin accented cuisine”.
