Since 1981, Villa Berulia has been serving delicious Italian and Croatian food in this tuxedo service old-school restaurant tucked away right out in the open on E 34th St. Zagat says, “exceptional hospitality is the strong suit of this Murray Hill family affair that follows through with excellent Italian fare.” The owners offer a warm atmosphere and often personally welcome and thank you. Recommended by many members of our group over the years, it has 4 stars on Yelp and 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor.

Our menu features Italian and Croatian delicacies such as the Pollo Berulia, a chef’s special of chicken sautéed in white wine with wild mushrooms and artichoke hearts; vegan options are also available. This is one of The Single Gourmet’s favorite restaurants, and they have upgraded the menu for us: from Pollo Ogni Stile to Pollo Berulia, and from Atlantic Salmon to Branzino (which is not even available on their house menu), and now the beef option is Osso Buco, while raising the price only marginally.

MENU (vegan friendly)

  • Calamari Freschi – Crispy
  • Minestrone Giardiniera – Hearty tomato broth with chopped vegetables & maccheroncini pasta
  • Insalata di Spinaci – Fresh spinach with bacon, stuffed mushrooms & extra virgin olive oil

Entrées (choice of):
  • Asparagus Ravioli (vegan) – Asparagus ravioli with lemon and white wine sauce
  • Pollo Berulia – Breast of Chicken sautéed with white wine, wild mushrooms & artichoke hearts, topped with Parma ham & mozzarella
  • Branzino (whole or fillet) – Simply grilled with seasonal vegetables
  • Osso Buco (+$15 supplement) – Braised Veal Shank, cooked bone-in over rice or gnocchi

Desserts (choice of):
  • Ricotta Cheesecake
  • Flourless Chocolate Cake
  • Lemon Sorbetto

* Consuming raw or undercooked meat, fish, shellfish or eggs increases the risk of foodborne illness

Pronounced “veechay-versa,” this upscale eatery in Hell’s Kitchen serves up Italian dishes in an elegant yet comfortable atmosphere. The owners Franco Lazzari and Stefano Terzi met while working at San Domenico, a Tony May (the Godfather of the Italian cucina in New York) restaurant, and hired the same gifted Italian designer-architect who helped create May’s celebrated restaurant to design their own. The results are impressive: tinted limestone, decorative urns and a 25-seat garden at the rear are among the eye-candy here. Executive chef-proprietor Stefano Terzi gives a new northern spin to Italian classics. ViceVersa uses only the highest quality ingredients produced locally or imported from Italy, and makes all its pasta from scratch. 4.5 stars on Open Table, 4 stars on Yelp, Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor.

With a rating of 24 in Zagat, 4.5 stars on OpenTable, 4 stars on Yelp, and a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor, ViceVersa is a New York Magazine Critics Top Pick: “The modern lines of Vice Versa are so (unassuming) it’s easy to walk right by its storefront. Do so, and you’ll be missing out on one of the most congenial and gratifying restaurants in the theater district, as well as one that’s become a whispered neighborhood favorite. Vice Versa is full of diverting surprises.” Owned by Franco Lazzari and Stefano Terzi, they use only the highest quality ingredients produced locally or imported from Italy. In the kitchen, Stefano makes all pasta from scratch, and his cooking respects the characteristics of each ingredient and values their qualities in each recipe — a true embodiment of the philosophy of Italian Cuisine.

Our menu starts with mixed salad with shaved grana padano; shrimp with cherry tomatoes string beans, red onion, balsamic vinaigrette, thyme; savory cannoli with eggplant, ricotta, vegetables, tomato coulis; entrees include swordfish Siciliana with toasted breadcrumbs and salmoriglio; chicken with fontina Valle D’Aosta, Prosciutto, and seasonal mushrooms; beef short ribs with Barbera wine, cinnamon, cloves, grappa, and spätzle; a “silent” vegetarian option (ask the waiter) and a tasting trio of Italian desserts: strawberry shortcake, coffee panna cotta, and chocolate ganache wedges (seasonal sorbet can be substituted for tasting trio).

Aside from living adjacent to the old restaurant on E 17th Street, the new space on Third Avenue at East 19th Street marks the first Sal Anthony’s restaurant in the immediate Gramercy Park area in a decade, and his son continues his tradition of serving a range of tasty food and drink at reasonable prices that will have you thinking about seconds (or thirds).

Appetizers:

  • Sweet Melon and Prosciutto – Ripe melon and air-cured ham
  • Zuppa del Giorno – Sal Anthony’s hearty daily soup
  • Clams Orgenata – Littleneck clams baked crisp
